Resources for Fiction Writers #5
A frequent blog where I share ideas and resources for fiction writers of all genres. Each issue is imagined independently and is intended to invoke inspiration.
Hello Readers,
Welcome to my open source blog where all images and ideas are free for you to use, and I don’t even require credit, although it would be nice.
Since the last issue was a bit lacking, I thought I would post another one this week.
Story Premises and Settings
Killboy - The boy with the ‘Died-us’ Touch. I’m not going to explain why or how, but a boy, or a young man, is stricken with the ability to kill things simply by touching them. When this happens, he takes on their lifeforce, making him stronger and harder to kill.
There are a lot of ways this story could go, and a lot of tropes you could use for the main character. Maybe he figures out a way to keep from killing people, only to be forced into it somehow. Or maybe, he becomes a sadist after the trauma of killing those closest to him and goes on a genocidal killing spree.
For a horror story, I get a real Stephen King vibe here, but this could also be a superhero/villain story. I can even see this being done as a murder mystery.
The Meta-star System — This one is more of an idea for a setting rather than a story, but it could be the catalyst for many stories.
So, the premise is that, a star the size of Arcturus or larger has several—more normal-sized—star systems in orbit of it. In case you’re wondering, these aren’t the biggest stars. Betelgeuse is to Aldebaran as Aldebaran is to Sirius. And there are even larger stars. I chose these because, I like the names; even Pollux.
There are so many story ideas for this. I had planned to use this as a setting for my WIP TTRPG, but the scale of it is just so daunting. Something like this could really benefit from a team of writers and creators.
My thoughts for the sun in the middle is to make the solar systems orbit far enough away that it shines no brighter than a full moon or a really bright star, unless you want to get into figuring out the day-night cycles of having two suns rise and set, possibly on different planes. It could even be a dark star, like a purple star, so that it’s light isn’t that bright. Would a purple star make things glow like a black light?
This doesn’t have to be a science fiction setting either. There’s no reason why magic couldn’t allow for travel between the star systems. Maybe the mythical races are divided up between the habitable planets of the star systems. You could even have some races inhabit planets that others can’t, without magic, of course.
Another idea to note: there could be meta-solar eclipses. Maybe something special or catastrophic happens as a result. There could even be a solar system alignment that causes something grand to happen.
I could honestly brainstorm this one to death. If you like this one, feel free to message me about brainstorming more ideas I’d be willing to share. I even have one about the dark star idea that I’m not sharing here.

Remembered one more idea I had. It could be a story about a spaceship sent from Earth to a distant star. However, due to the distance involved, they had to basically put a population on there where generations of people will get born, live and die on this ship, with their descendants to arrive at the destination a thousand years later. But now the destination is approaching and people are conflicted. Lots of people refuse to believe they are in a spaceship at all, they claim that the spaceship is just the world where they live. Other people form a religion where they believe that you can go to another world only through meditation. Etc. etc. Could be an interesting exploration of the human condition:)
I chuckled at Jaws 5: The Final Leg-acy 😂
One interesting setting I thought of is our world but flat, so that civilization developed in circumstances where everyone can see what everyone else was doing (so no surprise attacks, the Romans, for example, could see Hannibal setting out from Carthage and not be surprised etc) and what the modern world would look like as a result :)
