Resources for Fiction Writers #3
A frequent blog where I share ideas and resources for fiction writers of all genres. Each issue is imagined independently and is intended to invoke inspiration.
Hello, and welcome to my open source project. A frequent blog where I share ideas and resources for fiction writers of all genres. Each issue is imagined independently and is intended to invoke inspiration.
I’m dedicating this one to Science Fiction. Yes I capitalized it, because I think it’s that important. Without it, some things may not have been invented yet. Some ideas may never have been thought yet. Our vision of how the future should be is sculpted by every story and every idea.
Abilities

Electrosynthesis — The ability of an entity to create the energy needed to function via the absorption of direct current. The entity must have some sort of resistor-like component to help regulate the voltage and maintain a steady flow of current, as it must flow through the entity going in one end and coming out another. It could also have a capacitor-like component that would allow it to store a charge of current for later.
Retrogradation — The ability of an entity to slightly devolve, reducing its complexity by shutting down and/or collapsing nonessential components. Most likely a tardigrade-like creature, it could expel the water from the collapsed organ to make a quick escape. This could also possibly heal the creature, or it could be used to get rid of a parasite. It could even utilize cryptobiosis or necrobiosis (see issue #2) to reconstitute organs and tissue.
Anomalies
Time Spur — A deformation in the structure of a timeline that causes a certain period of time to be skipped over, never to be experienced. The effects of what would occur during that time still do, but depending on the size of the spur, it could mean lifetimes. Since time is merely a concept, a time spur can be of any size, and encompass any amount of time.
Phantom Ping — A blip on radar that is actually just radio interference. Space is full of energy. There is so much, that science has a hard time explaining it. This can often cause a false reading to appear on sensors.
Entities
Lithovore — Any entity that eats rocks and minerals for sustenance.
Metallo-Botany — Plant cells that have evolved, or were created, to replace the gluons in metals, creating a plant structure with the look of a dull or matte-finished version of the metal. Instead of photosynthesis, they rely on electrosynthesis (see above), or in the case of radioactive metals, they rely on radiosynthesis (refer to issue #2). When incorporating a superconductive metal, the plant could have magnetic and/or anti-gravitic properties.
Space Wyrm — Inspired by the exogorth in Star Wars, this gargantuan worm utilizes a form of retrogradation (see above) to put certain organs and tissues into a sort of hibernation. The water is stored in special sacs that can allow it to be frozen. When inside the heliosphere of a star system, they reconstitute themselves being sparked by the thawing of the water. Space wyrms are lithovores (see above) and reproduce via a very long process of mitosis.
Elements
Incoherium — A strange noble gas found on gas giants. When compressed, it becomes heavier, and when frozen, it sublimates into a solid that still looks like a gas. Imagine aerogel, but darker and a lot heavier. In solid state, it resists all radiation. In gaseous form, it wants nothing to do with itself, hence the name.
Vilidium — A superconductive metal with a melting point of 77.77°F, or 25.43°C. With an atomic weight almost one unit lighter than aluminum, this metal can sometimes be found in the geometric shape of the electromagnetic frequency in its vicinity. This structure increases its conductivity for that particular frequency.
