Hello Readers,
For this Sunday Funday, I’d like to bring to attention a module that I wrote for the board game, Risk, so that it plays out a bit more like the PC game, Civilization, and its sequels.
I did my best to include as many elements from Civilization that I thought wouldn’t detract too much from the feel of the gameplay you expect from playing Risk. For instance, there’s no civics or tech tree, but you do start in a single territory.
However, there are several leaders for each nation with traits like in Civ III. There are world wonders, barbarians, several victory conditions, and a natural wonder for each territory, though only so many will randomly populate the map.
There are even new territories to draw on the map for some balance that was needed for the system I designed for how your empire grows which is dependent upon territories controlled.
Also, there are a lot of optional rules to make it feel even more like Civ.
Yes, it does make the very long-to-play game take longer to play, but, to me at least, it makes it way more fun.
I do have plans to make a second edition, but I’m waiting for Civ VII to come out to see if there are any ideas to glean. I’ve heard that it’s actually quite different from its predecessors, so we’ll have to see. From what I’ve seen and heard, it does seem intriguing.
In any case, I’ve been a big fan of the series and have been playing since the Civ II days, and I’ve been playing Risk for even longer. With that said, I’m still eager to hear your thoughts about it. Reviews are gold for writers.
Not to leave others out, because I know this is for a pretty niche market, I have nine brand new Guess the Title images from the first series. Each of them have a two word title that rhymes, and it’s your job to guess it!
